Cette première édition était pour nous une expérience et le résultat est vraiment concluant. Nous continuons à développer l’aspect participatif de nos événements et ce projet donne une immense liberté pour proposer des expériences extraordinaires et inédites… Nous reconduirons donc ce projet l’année prochaine dans cette même lignée collaborative et participative.

Lancé il y a quelques jours, This Week Will Change Your Life (TWWCYL) vise à provoquer des bouleversements positifs sur les participants et leurs entourages en proposant des actions hors du commun, décalées, favorisant la bonne humeur, le mouvement et les rencontres.

21 actions individuelles et 7 actions collectives pour vivre de nouvelles expériences et amener un sourire sur son visage… et ceux des passants !

Chaque jour à 19h00 une nouvelle action individuelle est mise en ligne pour le lendemain. Suivez l’évolution en direct en vous abonnant à la page Facebook de ThisWeekWillChangeYourLife.

A découvrir et… participer !

… ou comment écrire un livre, y rajouter le contenu de participants et imprimer l’étonnant résultat : un livre avec 186 auteurs !

L’aspect « chacun a sa propre interprétation d’un texte, sa propre compréhension; faisons la ressortir»  est spécialement intéressante.

Assuming that every reader interprets an interesting book differently, they wanted to remind their target that reading is much more satisfying than obtaining information the fast forward way. They spread out pages of the book online, to Facebook friends, key opinion leaders and even the author himself to create a unique book, where every reader actively took part in generating its content. They created another story to the story, as seen through their own eyes. After the pages came back, they published the end result: a book with 186 coauthors and also revealed the author and the name of the book.

I’m not sure when or why people started thinking of ‘culture’ as a product, not a conversation.

« Hey Jude»  is not ‘culture’ on its own. It’s culture because when I sing « na, na, na-na-na na…»  you know right away what to sing next. It’s a shared experience between all of us.

it’s not about shiny plastic disks, carved stone, or colourful mud on canvas, it’s about how we relate to each other, what we share, what we have in common.

A culture where one side owns everything and the other side is forbidden from engaging with it is not a culture worth having.

« Anthropologists and socio-economists have spent decades examining the principle of people responding to a positive action with another positive action, commonly referred to as “direct reciprocity.”» 

De nouvelles expériences d’espaces d’échange entre inconnus sont en cours… avec succès.

Des squats genevois proposaient de telles espaces de partage, fonctionnant à ma connaissance plus dans une direction : mise à disposition par les habitants de l’immeuble/maison d’objets, vêtements inutilisés et qui pourraient être utiles à autrui. Ici, il s’agit d’échange pur entre étrangers.

Voici donc deux exemples simples et ingénieux de détournement de mobilier urbain vers un usage communautaire : une boîte à journaux et une cabine téléphonique… très british.

Stranger Exchange :

… Both artists have long been fascinated by open systems built on the philosophy of “Have a Penny, leave a Penny. Need a Penny, take a Penny,” such as Wikipedia and Craigslist, or The Free Shop in New York City. As with the Wicker Park boxes, they would try to create a dialogue between strangers and exchangers. But there would be two key differences from the boxes Chris had originally seen in Chicago: they would “broaden the scope of what could be dropped” and they would build a simple online “guest book” so that people could share messages about things left and received.

… they found an abandoned newspaper box, and with their friend Samantha repurposed it as the first local « drop box.»  They wanted the box to stand out enough to be noticed—but they didn’t want it seem at all “kitschy” or “contrived.” It was also critical that it feel anonymous, so that the community would immediately see the box as “theirs” and not as the possession of whomever put it there.

… They placed the Stranger Exchange box in Central Square during the late evening of October 25, 2009. Since then, either John or Chris tries to visit it every other day to see what has been left and taken. They’ve discovered books like A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, as well as movies, photographs, souvenirs, and even letters.

But what really has surprised the friends the most is the quality—and, in many instances, the effort—that has gone into some of the things that have been deposited. Plus, people are clearly making items specifically, for the box for no other reason than to share.

« I’ll take an orange juice, please,»  I explained, in poor Japanese.

« Hai!» , was the eager response.

A few moments later, I picked up my orange juice.

Except it wasn’t an orange juice.

It was an apple drink called « Appletizer» , some weird candy, and a little card.

Yeah. Now I was confused.

The guys behind the counter and I immediately launched into a humorous, protracted, Englishanese attempt to understand what the hell just happened. Through judicious fumbling, and after a great deal of precise hand-waving and mangled pronouns, it turned out to be something like this:

Welcome to the Ogori cafe!

As I sat down to enjoy my surprise Appletizer, loving this insane idea and wondering what would happen if you tried it in America, a Japanese woman approached the cafe. Since she could actually speak Japanese, she could read the large sign at the front and, fortunately or unfortunately, got advanced warning of what she was in for. Before making a final decision on what to order, she quietly snuck up to me to try to ask me what I had ordered, knowing that it would be her unwavering refreshment destiny. The staff put a quick stop to her trickery, and I didn’t answer.

Of course, regardless of what she ordered, she got the orange juice I ordered a few minutes earlier. But here’s one of the moments that make this experiment cool: she actually chose orange juice, just like I did. So she got what she wanted. Ogori cafe synchronicity!

Before we left, there was one last thing hat had to be done.

Mike went up to the cafe, slapped down a couple thousand yen (~$25), and ordered a little bit of everything: some ice cream, some snacks, some candy, some drinks, a Japanese horn-of-mysterious-plenty intentionally set up as a shocking surprise for the next lucky customer. (After his order, Mike received single iced coffee.)

As we walked away from the cafe, with just the right amount of delay, we heard an extremely excited « arigato goazimasu!! thank you so much!!»  yelled in our direction, from an ecstatic mom and her equally excited young son. They truly appreciated the surprise.

It was so worth it.
